Final Knock Sensor Question 200

Ok, so i want to try this idea. Remove my knock sensor and plug it in to my friends car with out attaching it to the block. Basicly the guy doesnt want me to take anything off of his car, and I don't blame him. Anywho, will the computer pick up the knock sensor as working if it is not on the physically block? I mean how could it know for sure, unless it purposly makes the engine ping, but I don't think it's that smart. So what do you guys think, good idea? Bad Idea?

Thanks for your help,
Blake

    Final Knock Sensor Question 200

The answer is no. The knock sensor must be torqued correctly to the block (have to use an inch-pound torque wrench) for it to read correctly. There is no way to test them unless you use a scope and also have the correct pattern file to compare it against. Just go buy one and chalk it up to preventative maintenance.

maybe you should just spend the $25 and simply replace it... if only to remove the possibility from the equation.

      Final Knock Sensor Question 200

I'm not sure where I heard this but hear goes.
Connect a timing light up as if you were going to check your timing. Shine the light on the pulley with the timing marks on it and then tap the knock sensor with somthing and observe the timing. If the timing retards when you tap the knock sensor then it is probably OK , if not replace it. The engine is of course running when doing this test.

      Good luck,

      Ron J.

    Final Knock Sensor Question 200

the knock sensor is a microphone meant to be mounted on the block. if you unbolt it, the ping will never get picked up. good luck, chuck.

      Final Knock Sensor Question 200

THanks for the feedback. The cheapest I have found it was a Adavance Auto for 50 bucks new. If you could point me in the right dirction for the $25 one, that would be greeat. The timming light idea would be valid, if it wasnt already retarded to its maxium (when the code 1-4-3 is flashed, it retards timming all the way so theres no chance it can ping, thats why you get crap for performance...). FInally, the whole idea of trying the sensor in my friends car was to make sure it WAS the sensor, and not the wiring harness. My car is NOT pining, thats not the problem here, so i could careless if it is going to detect the pings on my friends engine, i was just wondering if the computer will pick it up and not give me that dumb idoit light.

      Thanks again,
      Blake
