Has anyone heared of any issues after having a cleaning of the fuel system at a jiffy/quick change/etc. I remember click and clack discussing a situation but can't recall the specifics. A co workers"s son just had it done and is now having engine problems, although it is not a brick, I thought I'd ask my cronies here. Only 80K on the car and all of a sudden has oil consumption issues.

Sounds to me like the oil is diluted from excessive fuel being sprayed into the cylinders during cleaning/testing. This happened to me with my 245 after testing the fuel injectors myself. Car smoked a lot, but a simple oil change cured it. When the "oil" was drained it came out in a rush because it was so thinned down. Lucky for me it didn't blow up!

Personally, I can't see how an injector cleaning at a local Jippy Crude can lead to oil consumption. Then again, who knows? Maybe they started to change the oil because, like rats running through a maze, that is their usual conditioned response to every car that pulls up. The program was shifted as the orders came through, which may have been bad for your friend. In the end, they then realized the car was in the "shop" for something else... and the car was refilled with the wrong weight/oil. Plausable, indeed!

Or, better yet, the "mechanic" forced so much shit through the system at an unusually ultra high pressure that they damaged the rings... I wonder if that is that even possible? Maybe the injectors were so coked up that when the cleaning occured crud contaminated the oil.

How about, a ton of injector cleaning solution now mixed with oil. The car may now need a legitimate oil change -again due to contamination. I would really like to know the answer myself, and will pose this to my gearhead friends.

Peace, Jon

I also had a bad outcome after taking the hook on a so-called fuel system cleaning. This was at a reputable shop, but the 83 did not run any better, and overall fuel economy dropped by about 10%. Not sure what got screwed up, but something did. OK, I'm cynical, but my opinion is that those chemical cleaners are just a money maker for the seller, and most of the time produce no measurable benefit for you - the guy who paid. You can't go wrong with this general rule: Additives are worthless.

Can't think why the car would start using oil after the FI work, unless they hooked the PCV system up wrong.

I have only been to a "speedi-lube" once (circumstances forced to do so) and insisted on standing just outside the service bay and watching their every move. They did the oil change OK. I could see that the guy in the pit never checked the rear axle, but that didn't stop them from writing on their work order that axle lube was OK. Also wrote that all tires were at 32psi. I checked in their parking lot with my accurate gauge at 26psi. Bitched to the manager who personally "took care of it". I went for a coffee. Mistake. Gassing up a couple of blocks away I decided to recheck...32psi all right - on ONE SIDE of the car!

Here is what I will say about Jiffy Qucik Lube, or the similar...

When I first started messing with cars in 1988, my good friend brought his 351c powered Ford Maverick to one of those places, in a pinch while he was at work to save time before we hit the local drag scene at night. He wanted them to drain the gear oil from the rear, do a simple oil change, and some other fluid change... really, in an effort to forgo dirty hands just one time.

Those assh*%es forgot to fill the rear with gear oil... what do you think happened that night? He saved no time and lost a ton of money as a result of their ignorance and his lazyness.

Lesson: do the all the basic stuff yourself -especially when you know how!

Oh those jiffy stories are a dime a dozen, I actually had a tech forget the engine oil, started the car for about 3 minuets before I heared a ticking and shut it down, no problems after for two years.
My concern about the injection cleaning is if it can comprimise something in the system to create further problems, is it possible that a tech could use the wrong pressures or something. I have not had it done or witnessed it myself.
