center / e-brake console 200 1986

Just got a replacement center / e-brake console for my brick (the old one shattered). Before I install the new one, is there anything I can do to it stucturally from the underside that may prevent another shattering event?

Thanks

Once my kids got too old to climb over it I've found it holds up well!

Go down to Lowes/Home Despot and get some Aluminum sheet and make an internal frame (simply bend the Al to fit the inside. Cut slots/notches in required places with snips).
Get some Hilti HY 20/150/500 epoxy from the moron in the Red shirt and slather a layer on to the topside of the new aluminum frame and fit the 2 together,
It will be quite rigid.

What we need is someone with some aluminum sheet, a roller shear, a sheet metal brake, and a TIG welder, to make some consoles that won't break. They could be sprayed with Rhino-lining, upholstered, or even brushed or polished.

If it was just going to be upholstered, rivets could be used for construction.

Well I have a Miller Max Star 140 which can be upgraded to TIG and "some" TIG Al experience but doing TIG on sheet metal can be a bitch. Almost as bad as doing aluminum tube handrails!

It AIN'T as easy as Jessie James makes it look!

Oh, I know how hard it is. I've watched a welder or 2 that can lay down a beautiful weld all day long in sheet aluminum, and a lot more who burn the hell out of it trying.

Good thought. Have never looked into it, but: you could check clearance, use your broken console as a form (break it to fit) and use an expanable foam and sandwich the new and the ol; or use some of that liquid wood ( Mr. Max.....hardware or paint stores carry it). You can make it into a paste and just smear it on the inside/ run beads to reinforce. I would guess that anything that will stick, would help to reinforce. Just make sure you have the clearance so evrything works.

Just a thought.
