iPD's Hi-flow (turbo) exhaust - noise.. 200 1989

After about 2 years of enjoying the exhaust, I'm noticing a rattling noise coming from the exhaust when idling. When I had my mechanic do my front suspension bushings, I asked him to check it out. He said it's a good exhaust, but there's something loose internally... all the hangers were tight.

It's driving me nuts. I haven't called up iPD yet to see what they're warranty is on this, but... anyone else experience anything similar with theirs, if so, did you do anything special?

My mechanic told me that it may eventually restrict the airflow?

Why buy a new cat? If I can't look in one end of it and see daylight out the back, I don't want it :). Where'd I put that impact hammer....get my drift?

I'll add my vote to the bad catalytic converter theory. Sometimes you can tell if it's the cat by tapping it with a hammer. AutoZone has the best prices I've found for new ones, and they have a lifetime warranty.

Hello Eric:

Are you sure that it isn't your catalytic converter crumbling internally and causing the rattle? That is a classic failure mode for CC's... Exhaust noises can be a little difficult to pinpoint...

Good luck!

I havwe had my IPD hi-flow for about 2 years now and experienced loss of power, engine not breathing right, and an annoying rattle, along with the exhaust not sounding as it use to. The problem was the Catalytic converter, as stated before. If I had to do it over for a few hours work I would have done it myself and saved a ton of money.

Could the turbo exhaust be causing the CC to wear out faster, or is the 2 year time frame just coincidence?

Agree with Herb. Check your cat. The same thing happened to my 740 a couple of weeks ago.

I too agree with previous posters. Is it a metallic clanging/rumbling sound when idling? How about when accelerating? I had a brand new, but faulty cat where the ceramic disintegrated and was vibrating inside the cat housing when I would hit the gas or let the car idle.
Best,
-Adam

Ahh.. Yes it is a metallic clanging sound. Symptoms are pretty much exactly as described.

Is it something that needs to be fixed in the near future? Or will I just see poor gas mileage if I let it ride for a little bit?

Eric,
I rode around with the shotty cat for about 4 weeks. The metallic clanging really got to me and it was replaced for free under warantee. I don't think it would hurt if you kept it for awhile, (aside from emissions) but it might muck with the 02 sensor eventually (again not 100% sure).

Best,
-Adam
