I have the possibility to buy a 87 245DL -- 5 speed....187,000 (see below)
I currently have a 92 245 -- automatic, 171,000....Would it be worth it for parts????
And would all the parts be interchangeable?

'87 Volvo Wagon 245DL white, 5 speed. The car has 187,000 miles on it and needs some brake work, though it can be driven away safely. New Clarion stereo, newish tires (12 to 18 months old), excellent exhaust/muffler, no serious body damage, rot, or rust. Passed inspection in 2003, sticker still good. Front end and suspension good. Good bumpers. All glass and doors are good, beige vinyl interior good except for torn driver's seat (aren't they all?) Clutch and transmission are fine. Lights, horn, turn signals, wipers, all the little stuff works, but for a single cracked tail light lens. Rear seat folds nicely to create the usual roomy cargo area. A/C doesn't seem to work. Fan, defroster (front and rear), heater, all work. Rear wiper is inconsistent.

The '87 sounds like a nice car. If you don't want it, maybe someone on this board will be interested in it as a daily driver.

Chuck has it about pegged. I recently bought a '92 245 for parts and have an '87 245 already, and I can tell you that the A/C systems in both of my cars are R12, although the '92 has the later and larger silver receiver/dryer arrangement near the firewall that you see on the R134a cars. The 240s apparently didn't universally get R134a from the factory until '93. Also, the P/S pumps will be different, although you can certainly use either one in either car. The '87 pump will have an external reservoir, mounted to a bracket bolted on the driver's side shock tower near the coil, while the '92 pump will have an integral reservoir; a cleaner set up, but the older pumps are quite serviceable and durable (my '87 pump is original).
If you are for some reason thinking of swapping the '87 M47 manual tranny into your '92, you are going to need a different flywheel, as your '92 uses a sensor on the bell housing to pick up an RPM signal from the flywheel for the ECU. The '87 won't have this sensor, and its flywheel won't have the correct "notches" in it.

the engine, steering rack, diff., seats, wiper motor, radiator-if it has a trans cooler, alt, starter, ps pump, tailgate, exterior panels, glass, bumpers, lights, fuel pumps and tank. the ignition and injection is different, only the cap and wires will go on a 92. the ac system is r12 with 134 on the 92, so no swapping there. i'd rather find a 89 or later, 91-93 even better, especially with the same trans. good luck, chuck.

Was 89 the first year they started using galvanized steel?
I am not sure but I think i read somewehere it was.

i don't know that. 89 is when the k block came out and the ignition and the injection became lh 2.4/ezk. that means more stuff fits the 92. good luck, chuck.
