Replacing Rear Speakers In Doors 200 1991

So I am new to the VOLVO world, just got a 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan with 101,000 miles. I have done all the belts, brakes, etc and now I am doing something about the sound. So here is my problem: previous owner put in a great new CD player stereo, but left the old factory speakers in. Well, they stink of course. So I went to BEST BUY and CIRCUIT CITY this weekend to look at replacements. BB said they could not replace the rear speakers in the doors and keep the original factory covers on them. They said I needed to buy speakers that came with covers. All the ones they showed me had crazy colors and swirls and stuff on them, so that killed that purchase. So I went over to CC and they said they could replace the speakers but they would have to order new aftermarket Volvo factory covers to fit over the hole. Does any of this sound normal? I have been on Ebay and Volvo Parts to see if I could find these new aftermarket speaker covers for Volvo and nothing. Why can’t you just buy speakers that can fit in there? Thanks for your help.

Try IPD item CW829100.

Or do what I did. I cut with a hacksaw the frame that holds the grille (then used a grinder to smooth the surface) from the factory speaker and used it over the new 4" PIONEER speaker. Nobody will notice and you'll save around 15 bucks.

Replacing Rear Speakers In Doors 200 1991

I just did this exact thing last week at Circuit City for my 1990 240 DL. They had some open box Infinity speakers for a decent price, and they fit right in with the factory grills. By the way, Best Buy wanted to charge more for the extra parts "required", to the amount of $50, which is why I went looking elsewhere.

Hope this helps...

Jason

Which Infinity speakers? Online Circuit City is having a special on the 4002I, the 4 Inch speakers. Here's a link to them: http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&oid=67914&catoid=-8868&department=Car+Electronics&category=Car+Speakers

Those are the speakers, and they sound much better than the stock ones, at least worth the 60 bucks for the pair.

In my 1990 240DL the rear speaker grill is rivited to the speaker.I think yours will be the same. When removing them it can be tricky to get them off safely.I replaced my rear speakers with a pair of Sony speakers,I think they were 4 inch although a 5 1/4 inch will fit.I had to use the sony grille, but it is black and sits way down on the door so it does not stand out at all.
Nelson
PS I got the 4 inch size because that is what crutchfield said would fit but a 5 1/4 would be better.

In my 1991, the rear grilles pop off just like the front door grilles on earlier 240s. the speakers themselves are riveted to the door panels, but they can be replaced with a pair of 4" aftermarket speakers and Metra adaptors, and the old grilles will snap right on.

You could also just disconnect the speakers in the rear doors and put a pair of speakers in the rear dash. I've got a pair of 6x9s back there that are about all I could ever want.

Why is your problem only with the rear speakers & not the ones in the front doors? If you do go with new grills on the rear, it might be good to just swap out all 4. You'd hate to have the front ones go in a few months and not be able to match the grills.

depending on your budget & do it yourself capability, you could also go to a higher-end audio store. Nothing too fancy, but even Tweeter or Hi-Fi Buys is better than CC or BB. They might have an answer your looking for. Even if you don't buy from them, they should be better informed than those other places.

Whatever you end up doing, shell out the extra bucks for some thick gauge speaker wire- it makes all the difference.

They said the speakers would fit under the front door grills since the grill sits out a bit. On the rear speakers, the grills are on the inside of the case so they are closer to the speaker. I think I might just look into getting 6x9's, might just easier. Thanks.

You can buy a pair of Metra brand adaptors that let you mount your stock grilles over an aftermarket set of 4" speakers. The rear door grilles on the late 240s (90-93?) look different, but they mount the same as the earlier front grilles.

Check out Boston Acoustics, their speaker grille are not too nasty looking.

http://www.scosche.com
http://www.bestkits.com

Both are aftermarket car audio manufacturers whop supply grilles in all sizes.

Remember that with some flat black vinyl paint you can cover just about anything and make it look OEM

What about replacement speakers for front door 3' speakers? 200 1991

I'd like a drop-in replacement for my 88 240 but haven't been able to locate any. Anyone know a source?
