originality - overdrive on wagon 120-130

I have a driveable '66 wagon with a D-type OD in it that works! It looks like a retrofit a previous owner (bless him!) did 'cause there is no OD switch anywhere and no indicator light on the dash. Due to some earlier dedicated scrounging, there's a good column switch and OD indicator light here (like in 123GT) that would be really nice to add, and those "overdrive" emblems are still available.

Functionality will win, but before punching a hole in the dash, I have to ask about originality: were 122 wagons ever officially sold by dealers with the Laycock overdrive installed (with OD, switch, light & emblem), or are all wagons with OD due to owner retrofits? I don't have any old sales brochures to refer to, and I've never noticed a wagon with all of this stuff on it at once. . . . the only "overdrive" emblems I've seen have all been on sedans.

How do you know if it works? If you don't have a switch somewhere I don't see how you can use it. Or did the PO tell you that it works? Peace

I'm using the second position of the fan switch (discussed in archives). It actually works out well -- once you are at highway speed you usually don't need the fan on to get sufficient heat/def air flow.

Just curious -- anyone know if OD was offered on 140 or 240 wagons?

It was offered on 140 and 240 wagon, but only on the saloon versions of the 120. Indeed there is also no such thing as a factory 220 auto.

Regards

Pete

Auto was available on the wagon in the USA. A friend of mine in Holland has a very nice one which was reimported from NYC where it was bought by it's original (Dutch) owner. None RHD from the factory.

The Haynes manual has a lovely page of English to American translations of various car parts.
As for etymological history...?
In Olde England when you lived on a country estate you needed a car big enough to carry things from town...ergo...Estate.

(I have no freakin idea, just a wild A** guess).

any history buff's/avid discovery channel watchers/anglophiles out there know?

Good guess then. You pretty much got it right there.

The Station Wagon as known in the US evolved from guess what? A carriage to haul stuff from the station!

Hence "Estate" and "Wagon". Same thing but different.

Hmmm, they have "pubs" in England, so they wouldn't have used a sedan/saloon to go to the "saloon".... would they?

They "estate", for utalitarian use around the "estate" is what I originally guess, makes complete sense.

And a small 2/3 door wagon (like the 1800ES) is referred to as a 'shooting brake'. I guess personal car without the passenger or cargo capacity for heavy work, but enough room for a few long guns in the rear.
