Put in 1/2 qt 2-cycle oil, sounds 'off', now what? 200 1986

Night time under the shade tree. Working on the 1986 244GL, estimated 260K miles.

Oil change. New Mann filter. First quart in, OK. Second quart, the oil didn't look "golden" like the first quart did, even with poor lighting and back-lit.

Looked at the color with trouble light up close - "It's Green!" Aauuugh!! Look at the label - Havoline 2-cycle for the chain saw.

Dunno how that bottle got in with the rest of the Havoline 20W-50. Same brown bottle, same red cap. I just grabbed four bottles out of the case without reading labels. Rats! Maybe I mixed the 2-cycle in when storing oil, the case was open. Maybe the 5th quart that all my 240s have on board was the 2-cycle.

So I added 1/2 quart of the right stuff, and then put in quart #3 and #4. So the oil is 12.5% 2-cycle and 87.5% 20W-50, all Havoline.

Car is blocking drive for wifemobile, which must away early up Thursday. So I cranked the 1986 with no 25amp fuse for 10-15 seconds. Then put in fuse and started it up.

Seemed OK, ran smooth and went into closed loop (it's 65F here), but I can hear a low-in-block sound that (1) I am not certain was never there before, and (2) sounds like a rod or main bearing knock.

Options are A drain the works, and put in all new oil, keep old filter. B drain the works, put in all new with new filter, C run it as is for 3,000 miles and do a regular scheduled oil+filter change then.

Can the 1/2 quart 2-cycle oil damage anything? Damage the bearings? Burn up in the combustion chambers in a damaging way? Screw up the flame trap? FUBAR the plugs?

Can you provide some insights that I don't have? There are several Oil Experts who are members here.

Thanks in advance, as always,

Bob

Not a bad idea for those for whom cycles = cylinders.

But...that n/a B230F has so little power that cutting it in half would leave me unable to leave the driveway, don'cha think?

HO Ho

You say it sounds a little "off". Does it go "rrrrring-a-ding-ding-ding-ding" when you rev it?

;-)

2 stroke oil used to be basically a 20 or 30 wt oil that was refined better and cleaned up a bit with no ( or possibly different, depending on the manufacturer ) detergents.
It shouldn't hurt to leave it in for a while.

Save the....uh...refreshments until AFTER you're finished with the next oil change :-)

I LIKE ALL YOU GUYS' ANSWERS !! 200 1986

They seem to back up my usual philosophy: Will the cheapest / laziest repair actually to the job? In this case - yes. I will run the stuff 3000 miles, top up as needed, then do a correct oil+filter change.

Many thanks,

Bob

From the gut, I would suspect the same as the others (Randy's response made me laugh)... oil is oil. If you are a freak then change the oil, not the filter. I see no drama for your Volvo mama.

Wouldn't the 2 cycle oil "burn off" faster than standard oil. So, in the end, you may have to top off the level soon rather than later.

The oil should be OK.

The sound your hearing....does it make your brick sound like a diesel ?? Does the noise level become less with higher RPM's ? Could be a noise dampener (little rubber like boot) or two in the valve stem(s). They get compressed and make a tapping (bearing / rod warning) sound. My 89, 245 has had that sound for the past 67K miles. Yea, plans are for a redo come warmer weather.

...for what it's worth.

I like the posts where I have the opportunity to "guess". Not because the guesses are at the posters expense but rather because I can go with my gut.

Chances are the car is making mostly the same sounds it made prior to adding the 16oz of 2 cycle. You obviously approached the situatiion with a more finely tuned ear than you normally would because you were listening for evidence of trouble. I wouldn't give it a second thought at this point as I can't imagine how it could hurt anything.

noooo it wont hurt it..its STILL OIL!!! its just a higher refined oil so it will mix more redily with gasoline. as for the noise...i dont know what you did.
if it wasnt there before the oil change....what happened? check your oil filter...and let it idle a few minutes.. so it can build oil presure
.

So is 2-cycle oil really thin stuff? Maybe SAE 3? Noting on the bottle.. 200 1986

I hope that "oil is oil" will do for 3000 miles or 3 months until the next change.

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer.

Regards,

Bob
