16 Valve 2 peace head 700 1989

Last year my mechanic did a head gasket and valves on the old 16 valve. I brought it to Arkansas...it started leaking oil on the way here from between the 2 pieces of the head. I tightned the bolts and it got better.

Well, since my brother has been driving the car, the problem has gotten worse and now the car is undriveable. Hopefully it's just those nuts that have worked their way loose. He's not overly handy with mechanics, so I'm going to look at it.

My question: How tight should those be torqued? All I need to do is break one of them. The car just needs to last a couple more months and we're going to put it to pasture.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I did my own rebuild on this head. Twice, and it still leaked!! I've tried everything I can think off... redid the distributor seals and gasket, replaced front and rear main seal, recleaned and torqued the bolts, still the drip, drip, drip of oil. I think this engine is doomed to leak. I only leak about a quart every couple of weeks, but this is very annoying. My guess from your description is that your leaking more than a moderate amout.

you might be leaking from the distributor, I would check the two o-rings on that and tighten the bolts there first, then check your valve cover, then look into the front seal (camshafts) and the crankshaft seal. Then I would be thinking about pulling the head. Last thing to do would be the rear main seal, (have to remove the tranny for that!!!!!)

    good luck

all the bolts below the valve cover are torqued at 15 ft/lbs. breaking the bolt isn't the worry, pulling the threads out of the head is. pull the top, remove all the oil in the lower half, clean it good with the remover volvo sells for that orange stuff, lotsa brakleen and drying time, use a paint roller to apply the new orange stuff let it set up a little and bolt it down. i like to let them sit overnight and let the sealer dry before pouring oil in it. good luck, chuck.

      Chuck,

According the manual I have, the cam carrier can't be taken off without removing the cams. I can't tell that is the case...the 5 bolts are visible and it looks as though I can lift the whole unit out after removing the timing belt.
Will I really have to remove the cams and all the lifters? ICK...

I appreciate your help a LOT! I want to get this old dear back on the road.
