How to wire in an underhood lamp 700 1990


Today I rescued an underhood lamp from a 1988 745 Turbo to fit to my 1990 745SE which has never been fitted with any such lamp. My question is simple: What is the best way to connect the live feed wire to the car's power supply (The ground connection is taken care of by the lamp's fixing screw)? Should I splice into an existing live wire or run a separate [fused] connection to the battery?

James,

My `90 740SE has the light as standard.
Have a look at the pic below, you should have the wire arrowed coming out of the loom, this is the feed to the light.
I doubt that Volvo bothered to produce two different looms depending on whether or not a light was fitted.



If you can`t find it I suggest you splice a wire into the sidelight circuit, then it can`t get left on and flatten the battery.

Thanks Colin! I shall have a look at the loom when I get the chance. I'm not sure whether or not there is any provision for the wiring on my car. I think I shall go down the sidelight route...

P.S. your inlet gubbins is totally different to mine. What type of injection system does the B200E have? My car is the same age as yours but it has a B200F engine with Motronic- the 859th B200F engine ever made :)

Mine is plain vanilla K Jetronic AKA CIS/mechanical injection, no cat or other emission control systems crap,(last of the breed!).
AFIK. all the "E" suffix engines had this set up.
There was a hybrid system made which had the basic K Jet system with a CAT and electronic control of the mixture but I don`t know if was ever used by Volvo.

Mine must be one of the very first 'Lambda Sond' equipped U.K. market 740s. I presume that the B200F is the updated version of the B200E for the catalytic convertor age.

I think it has the Motronic injection system.
