Building Custom Exhaust where to start? (81 245 B23E) 200 1981

Hey all,
I am still in mid restore on my 81 Brick for those of you who remember my thread back in December.
http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=717163

The car is progressing very slowly...but should be done by the end of April. I am just trying to figure out the exhaust, and how I want it built. I am using the standard Volvo manifold, but from there, I am not certian. Here are the options:
1) 2.5" custom from the Manifold
2) 2.5" custom attaching at the end of the standard Volvo manifold & downpipe

both of these options are going to run dual mufflers running under the passenger side and then straight out the back passenger side. My question here is more focused on whether or not to go from the Manifold with the custom, or from the Manifold and volvo downpipe to custom.

All thoughts are appreciated...
Cheers,
-Phil

You got to keep it legal with a catalytic converter unless you are from outside of the USA. Here's my setup:
I am running a stock dual head pipe, which is getting replaced with a new one on Friday. A 2 1/4" AP cat converter, 2 1/4" pipes back to a 260 Diesel muffler, no resonator and a 2 1/4" "L-shape" tailpipe (not the "S" type)with a chrome tip. It was very cheap to do.

Phil- just had to replace the 'downpipe' (the pipe running from the exhaust manifold back to the cat) on my '87 wagon. After finding out how much the dealer wanted (cubic dollars!!!), I started looking for something else. found a downpipe at mbz.org for about $80 bucks. Unbacked it after receiving it (1) day after I ordered it (via. UPS ground no less) and found out something very interesting. The new pipe was devoid of any of the 'stuff' attached around the old one. After I installed the new pipe it was vsry clear what that 'stuff' was around the pipe, sound deadening material. The new pipe makes that nice clean sound and the area around the header/downpipe is much cooler when the engine is running. It seems the folks at Volvo thought that the sound was somehow objectionable and insullated the he-- out of the pipe.

Call it the 'seat of the pants' test but I do believe the engine runs a bit better without all that extra baggage.

Hey Phil,

The stock maniflod and downpipe are pretty efficient out the door. B23E means no catalytic. I'd say dual right from the downpipe all the way back. It's an option I am looking at for my 242.

Happy Bricking!!!

Thanks for the advice, but when you say dual from the pipe down do you mean run dual pipes?

Yep!!!

Dual all the way. There should be enough room under the sway bar and between the frame and the gas tank to get it through.
