91 240 Overdrive problems PLEASE READ DETAILS 200

1ST of all thanks for all the help thus far....

I have a 91 240 approximately 160k, the over drive will not engage ... I resoldered the board, checked the relay and changed the OD solenoid, the car will go into overdrive but at exactly 65 miles an hour!! I have been told its a weak transmission and that I need to have it rebuilt.... Any iother advice besides rebuiding the transmission I fear that I may have to go looking for a new car I just dont trust anybody when it comes to the transmission

Thanks

Step

Sounds like the screen is clogged. Drop the pan and clean or replace it.

"...its a weak transmission and that I need to have it rebuilt.."

Now that really sounds like a shaky mechanic doing guess work - he undoubtably figures that for the "rebuild" money he should be well to track down the true issue.

Are you sure you replaced (or had replaced) the OD solenoid? Do you trust the mech who did that? They often get sticky. Mine does when it's really cold, the more speed, the easier it engages.

If nothing else checks out, get a tranny from the junker. Cheap, and they last a very long time. Anyhow, I would be surprosed it really is the tranny.
Check the fluid and replace it first. That usually helps 'revive' the shits.

Good luck.

I didn't know tranny fluid could do that ;-)

Kickdown cable. Check. Adjust if necessary ... 200

it's the "other" cable on the spool that carries the throttle cable.
Looser gives lower-RPM shifts. Tighter gives higher-RPM shifts.
Disconnect the cable and see if it moves freely in it's sheath
without binding up. Then play with the adjustment.

Is the transmission fluid up to proper level and clean.

Sounds a little like low pump pressure due to ??

Could try a fluid flush and replace.

It does shift to OD, right, at 65mph. Means all the parts are there and working, just not at low speed. High speed = higher pump pressures.

I can't say whether your transmission is bad or not, but I do understand your frustration with transmission repairs. Automatics for 240s are generally great transmissions; I can buy good ones at my local pick-n-pull for $100 all the time. I'd install a used one before I'd spend a lot of money on repairs.

BTW, I noticed that you're from Lawrenceville. I broke down there once, in 1984. I was driving a 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II Cale Yarborough Special (how's that for a long car name?), and I stopped at Jim Osborne Reproductions to pick up some decals. The starter picked that exact moment to die, and one of the guys at the shop drove me to the auto parts house, and then installed the starter when we got back, and wouldn't let me pay him for it. That was a nice bunch of people.

1991 245, 61k miles, looking for a 5 speed 92-93 245 cheap.
