Yep, like James said, dirt will will do it, especially things like pine needles.
The easiest way to find leaks around the trunk lid is to lay a strip of newspaper over the seal, close the lid and see if the paper will slide out easily. Work your way around until you find the problem area. If the problem is all along the lock edge then you can adjust the lock. Adjusting the hinges is very awkward and not worth doing unless you have a serious gap. What you can easily do is raise the trunk seal slightly in the problem areas. Lift the trunk seal off the lip and then put a filler strip on the lip (like a few layers of plastic tape) or, as I have done, put a bead of silicon sealent into the rubber seal, set it down all the way onto the lip then raise it slightly and let it cure before closing the lid.
If there is a sunroof then the drains in the corners of the sunroof tray may need cleaning. If debris has gotten into the rear drain cavity (where those hoses are attached) then the drains may be plugged.
