Brake Pedal Travel Increasing 200 1990

I've noticed that the travel of the brake pedal on my 1990 240 (automatic, 146K)has slowly increased, and am wondering if this is a sign of master cylinder failure in progress, or if a brake flush would have any effect. I doubt the brake system has ever been flushed. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Sounds like my MC when it went bad.

One thing to be aware of. Sometime after replacing my MC, I needed to overhaul my rear brakes. Naturally, I bleed/flushed the system as instructed. Brakes were fine for awhile but shortly thereafter the junction box began to leak.

Moral of the story, I'd advise using a brake bleeder tool with a pressure control on it when bleeding - I used a friend. From what I've read and heard, regular bleeding can stress older or marginal seals in a MC or juction box and cause them to leak....

Yes, almost without a doubt, especially considering the next revelation, following.

re: "...or if a brake flush would have any effect. I doubt the brake system has ever been flushed...."

Unfortunately, your brake master cylinder would probably have lasted longer had you flushed your fluids at least every couple of years. Fourteen years with the same old fluid -- it's a miracle you can still stop the car. You might have to expect some other expenses, too, I'm afraid, besides the m/c, including caliper problems (e.g., stuck bleeders that might brake and require replacing the calipers).
Best of luck, in any case.

If you step on it, gets firm but then promptly sinks, then it's the internal M/C seals leaking. Get it fixed ASAP!

Thanks, but it doesn't slowly sink. It just the travel is pretty far -- after the pedal is depressed, it brakes well and there's no sinking. Just notice the travel after driving another 240 and in comparison to virtually every other car I drive. The pads are all good to very good.

Well, to ward off future disasters, I'd at least do a fluid flush ASAP. It can't hurt and probably will do a world of good!
On the optimistic side, maybe it was flushed in the past (when the car was owned by the previous owner during the warranty period).
        Again, best of luck.
