Transmission Removal, How High Should the Car Be? 900

Duplicate post, I inadvertently posted this under “all” and "all" has limited viewers.

I have about 17” from the bottom of the transmission bell housing to the floor. The car’s back end is about 8” higher than the front end. I think the front end should be higher. If I add a 4X4 spacer between the jack and the front jacking point I can get the front up another 4” and then lower the rear a little. The tranny jack is about 7" high. Is this high enough?

On my third attempt (on the third car), to remove the filler tube, I wedged a 4X4 betwixt a crescent wrench and the frame then used a small jack to encourage the filler tube nut to turn. It fought back all the way. The last three turns took two of us pulling the wrench using a bar through the combination wrench’s closed end.

How sturdy is the car when up on jackstands? 900

I am going to be swapping a manual trans into my car soon and would like to know how sturdy the car is when placed on 4 jackstands. There was a story on the news about this guy that just died when his car fell off the jack and crushed him, I don't want my car doing that to me.

How sturdy is the car when up on jackstands? 900

I started years ago with cheap tubular 2-ton jack stands and logs. The logs are about 14" in dia standing on an end. A few years ago I got a Harbor Freight 6 ton each jack stands ($20 a pair) as a gift. Since my present logs are supporting a project car, I needed another set of stands to get the car up and ended up with. Sears 6-ton each stands (about $55).

Funny thing, the Sears 6-ton stands have twice the oomph that the Harbor Freight 6-ton stands have.

The weaker HF stands are in the rear, supporting the axel because the rear is lighter. These are backed up by a 3 1/2-ton jack under the differential. Just enough to give it firm pressure. The front stands are under the jacking points and is backed up by a pair of 2-ton tubular stands with a coupla wooden wedges.

I don’t trust cast iron. I was looking for quality all steel stands but couldn’t find any. If you look on line you will see a lot of six ton stands. I think these are 3-ton each, 6 ton for the pair. At $55 the Sears stands were very good.

The point is, if you are going to be under the car, double your factor of safety. Assume any one stand will fail. (Although Paul’s 10-ton truck stands would probably be enough without a backup.)

How sturdy is the car when up on jackstands? 900

Hi Andrew, Thanks again for the pictures, I use the taller truck jack stands there 8-10 ton jack stand and I put them on the jacking points of the car and make sure they a perfectly flat on the ground. Once the car is on top of the jack stands I give the car a good series of rock and rollers before my ass goes under the car.

Transmission Removal, How High Should the Car Be? 900

Hey Jav, pretty tough nut, I don't take the tube off the pan any more. Take the two bolts out of the starter and remove with the tube. To do that I need the car 26 inches off the ground.

Thanks Paul,
The tube was only a challenge. I had to lick it once, just to show the others cars and say, Who’s the boss now? :o)

The car is going up a little higher.

Transmission Removal, How High Should the Car Be? 900

Tom,

When we replaced my son's 83 244Ti AW71 with a fresh box last spring ... we had his Brick up 19" from the floor to the underside seam of the rocker panels.
We used a Harbor Freight transmission jack but only to pull it free and position the new AW back in. Once we had the old box loose, and pulled back from the engine ... we wrestled it off the jack onto a large piece of cardboard and slipped it out from under the Brick. Then we placed the refurbished AW on the cardboard slid it under the tranny tunnel and then lifted it back on the jack. We used an impact wrench to run the jack up and down and it worked pretty well. If we'd left it on the jack, I'd had to bring the Brick up several more inches and I'd reached the max my jack and stands could handle. Hope this is of some help.

Thanks t-bone, that is a big help. I have the same tranny jack and I just measured 19” to the floor board. I’m going to get the front end up a little another 4”.
