New Nissens Radiator Leaking :-( 200 1993

Last December I did a preemptive radiator replacement on my Volvo 240. I used a Nissens 3-row radiator, put in new hoses, a new expansion tank & cap, and Volvo coolant. Now, less than 4 months later, the Nissens is leaking at the lower corner on the driver's side. This just started happening within the last couple weeks. I found a very small puddle on the garage floor and then discovered the expansion tank almost totally empty.

Am I looking at another radiator here? I'm pretty sure that I should be able to get it replaced, since it's only been four months since I ordered it from Swedish Engineering. Or is this something that can be fixed with "stop leak". BTW, I had the same thing happen to me with an IPD radiator 10 years ago. In this case it started leaking after 18 months and I fixed it with stop leak. There were no further problems, although the cooling efficiency never seemed quite as good.

Thanks,
Ted

I received the replacement radiator. They sent me a 2 row rather than 3 row, so that went back. Unfortunately I didn't discover the error until I had the old one out of the car. In removing it, I discovered that the upper radiator hose had started working it's way lose. This was due to the nozzle it attached to being pushed in and out of alignment. When I had it out of the car I was able to bend it back and straightened. So far so good upon re-installation.

    Sigh

Is this leak on a seam, or near the connection for the overflow tube? If so.. and the unit is all metal... you can repair it easily with a propane torch, flux, and some solder. This is of course after you find out if you can get a replacement.

Stop Leak in a new radiator? Forget it: they owe you one. Either they provide a quality radiator or a refund.

BTW: I am VERY suspicious about the quality of Nissens brass units. Mine failed in about twelve months.

My Nissens 3 row began leaking at the top radiator hose connection after 13 months. FPC Groton replaced it, no charge, but given your experience I too am weary of thier quality.

Which brand of radiator do you recommend? Available from any of our favorite on line sources?

      Thanks in advance.

      Dan W.

Modine makes a good 3 row for $130. Available at any good radiator supplier nationwide.
The guy up the street does nothing but rads all day long and said he swaps Modines into Volvos all the time with no "comebacks".
