red battery light lit 200

After having the engine being running for some time, I noticed a red battery light lit up after I stop my car and then accelerated, the light went away. What could it be? I had a new battery and the car has been tuned up two months ago..

Help me..

Kirk

I've always had the "just the battery light" blink be the diode in the alternator, and the "all the lights on the dash" flash be the voltage regulator...either way...the alternator needs some attention.

Tell Scotty down in the engine room that the brushes are worn out. Happens every 100,000 miles or so. They are too short to pick up the small current generated at low speed, do better at higher speed.

Easy fix. Get a new set (includes voltage regulator unless you have an older model with external regulator) from fpcgroton.com, or alloemparts.com or swedishengineering.com your local dealer.

Easiest to replace with alternator out of car, but can be done in situ. If you pull it, take the opportunity to replace all three rubber bushings (one is in the tensioning bracket).

When installing, remember to connect the ground wire.

Good Luck,

Bob

Your alternator is most likely not working properly. The alternator must put out enough current to operate all the electrical systes in the car plus a little more to keep the battery charged. Could be something simple like a worn or loose belt -- check this first. The alterntor must turn at the proper RPM to generate enough current. If the belt is worn or loose, it will slip when the load on the alternator is high. Do you have any unusually high electrical loads, such as a monster stereo?

If that isn't the problem, it could be the voltage regulator/brush assembly. The brushes can get worn and make intemittent contact. Many auto stores will test for free.

It also would not be the first time a new battery was faulty.

Good luck,

Dan
