Price of Motor & Trans 200 1985

I am purchasing an 82 Volvo sans engine and trans from a fellow brickster. What should I 'expect" to pay at a pick and pull for an engine and trans? Not looking for anything special, just a good one. Any years better than others, and anticipated problems putting it in the 82?
Also, Does anyone know of anyone who rehabs old Volvo radios/ tape players. Local dealer has an "exchange" program for $150 which sounds expensive. Would like to keep the original radio with the tape player(- but have it not eat the tapes, etc,), so am not exploring the "new" stereo option at present.
Thanks

You are going to have to look closely at the ignition and fuel systems in the 82 that you are buying to make certain you get everything you need. An 82 will have a Kjet system. Fuel distributor differs in part number and location from turbo to non-turbo...will you be getting any of this? You also may have an MPG ignition set up or a Bosch ignition set up. You are assured of needing a wiring harness...this isn't gonna be cheap...Motor around $350.00. Tranny, depending on what kind it was...manual...BW55, or what you would prefer AW70...another $350.00. It would be cheaper to buy an entire extra car.

The 82 may or may not be a K-Jet car. The easiest way to tell would be to check the intake manifold.... but without an engine check the VIN, or look at whatever wiring remains. If there are four connectors for the injectors it was an LH-1.0 car.

Either way, I would consider pulling any car with a simliar type injection setup. Just hook everything up to the wiring harness. I much prefer dealing with EFI to dealing with K-Jet.

Depending on where you're at the $350 is a reasonable price. The yards around here want about $200-$250 for a complete engine, and about $80-90 for an automatic transmission.

But without an engine and transmission, this car is a prime candidate for a B230FT swap or even a non Volvo motor. Unless the car is needed for daily transportation anytime soon I'd say go crazy. Small block Chevy motors are a dime a dozen. Or maybe a GM V6. A supercharged 3.8 or 4.3 would be neat. Or maybe a Mazda rotary engine.

That depends on the yard prices in your area. The local U-Wrench-It near me sells Manual Trannys for $35, autos for $50, and the engine couldn't be more than a couple hunderd at the most. Speaking of which, there's an '80 240 Wagon and an '88 Sedan in there right now. I wonder how difficult it would be to fit a B230 with a K-Jet. -or just refit the entire vehicle to LH-Jetronic 2.2 system with a nice B230F. FYI, I live near Holland Michigan, but Howie Veneklasen has been building U-Wrench-Its around the country the last few years. The yards have high turnover rates, -but dirt cheap prices.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

Pretty cool! We changed an 82 242T over to a B230. It was a wiring nightmare for a bit, but we figured it out. I just know that I can usually purchase an entire parts car for $500.00...and then everything I need is there.
