blown engine on 740 Turbo 700 1988

'88 740 Turbo. Hole in the engine block. What are my best/cheapest options? Is there a good site I can purchase a rebuilt/remanufactured engine? A local shop wants two grand and are using a used engine w/120k miles on it w/ only a 90 day warranty.

Hey thanks all for your suggestions. I have decided to definitely NOT use the shop that it's at. They've just been jerking me around way too much and it sounds like they're taking advantage of me as well. I'm in the Seattle/Tacoma area if anyone has further suggestions. THANKS!

Did it look like this?

The engine was in the 1988 760T my wife drives. I bought it with the broken engine. I installed a 123,xxx mile 1991 B230FT in it very inexpensively. The car (which the donor engine came from) had been hit in the front and chipped the harmonic balancer, so the wrecking yard made it a U-Pull It motor rather selling the motor outright.

Your cheapest solution is a used engine. Volvo introduced 13mm connecting rods as a running change in the 1989 model year. Get a 1990 or later B230FT engine.

You did not state where you are. If you'll state where you are, you will get suggestions about reputable wrecking yards near you. An engine can be shipped inexpensively by truck.

Run as fast as you can from that shop! You should be able to find an engine for less than $500, or better yet a whole car. Instalation should not take more than 8 hours. While you are there change the rear main seal, timming belt(you don't know how old it is or how long the engine has sat)and inspect all belts and hoses. Where are you, I am sure other brickboards can help you locate a local shop, or better yet do the work yourself, all you have to lose is time, at worst you will deliver the car to the mechanic wihtout an engine. If you have a camera and a note pad take pics of all steps and notes to go with them, instalation is the reverse of removal, as simple as that. What you have to gain is knowledge, something one never has enough of. Though it may seem like a daunting task remember, others have done it before you, refer to a good book such as haynes or chilton and have fun.

You don't know you can't do something until you prove it(remember the kid who didn't like jello, because he never tasted it he assumed he didn't like it)

Enjoy

Very few mechanics will appreciate your help as this usually does not save time. Ask first!

I put a rebuilt turbo engine in my '92 940. I got the engine from Advance Auto they sell them for RECON engines which i believe is in Philladelphia. Almost 30K miles on the engine now and it runs real strong. BTW, the motor was way cheaper than a rebuilt from Volvo.
