Oil Light 700 1987

Once again I am looking for some feedback on my 87 740T SW @ 250km

Today I noticed the oil light coming on and off...Oil level appears ok and my last oil change was about 2000km ago (15-40 semi).

The light sorta flicker on when I start to accelerate from a stop ~ around 2000-2500rpms....Once the speed and load stablize the light goes out...apply gas it goes back on (flickering). I have read the FAQ's and it sound like it would be the wiring or the oil pump.

The car has been producting a little more engine "rattle" lately ...could this be related?

Thanks for the feedback...Hard to get at but I will have a look at the wire.

Once again it's another intermittent problem that my 740 has had lately. I still haven't solved the last issue, but then again it hasn't happened again.

The oil light thing only seems to happen went the car is hot...The auxiliary fan is on and then it flash on/off or stays on for a bit when accelerating.

The main wire harness is a little "flakey" no pun intended...so maybe thats the root of all evil!

If you look at the harness connectors for things like he washer pump, cruise control modules, and the harness to harness connection you will see that the plastic housing accomodates a specialized bullet style connector end. This end is molded right onto the end of the wire and is nothing that you can just crimp on. So you buy a washer pump wire from Volvo that has that specialized end on it already and then you crimp on a female spade connector on the other end and you are good to go. Volvo part number 3523813, list price $4.57

Is the wiring deteriorating? Insulation may be crumbling and grounding out. If it is the rest of the engine harness wiring is in a similar condition.

If it is that consistent then I would just by-pass the wiring and see if it still does it. Volvo makes what we always referred to as "washer pump wires". They have the correct female end on them to fit into the harness connector. Crimp a spade connector onto one end and plug it on the oil pressure switch and run the other end over to the harness connector. You don't have to get creative on routing the wire until you know that it is going to fix it. If it fixes it then go ahead and do a nice job or routing it and zip tying it into place. I keep a couple of these wires made up in my tool box just for diagnosing stuff like that.

Thanks I will try that out....

I am not completely clear on the wire I need to build....A spade connector on one end and on the other end?
