Question on alternator ground..... 200 1990

This morning when I fired-up the 240, the in-dash voltmeter showed everything was charging and normal. Drove it a few minutes and the voltmeter shows 12V. Seems to me that the alterantor is not charging. I shut the car off, and then turned the ignition into the 'on' psoition. The SRS bag remained lit after I started the car. What's the relation between alternator and SRS? I recently replaced the alternator belts and was wondering if I had knocked off the ground wiring. I tried to peek down there, but didn't see anything. Where is this wire located? I am not ruling out the fact that I may need new brushes (or an alternator).

Thanks,
Raj

Thanks all...fixed it this evening. 200 1990

It happened to be the brushes. One of them was sticky and not being pushed out by the spring. Gave it a little bitta synthetic oil and washed it down with some WD40. Cleaned it all up, put it all back together and she is purring like a kitten!

Cheers,
Raj

Question on alternator ground..... 200 1990

The ground wire attaches to the rear of the alternator on a "post" which is an extended version of one of the 4 bolts holding the alternator case together. It takes an 8mm nut.

The other end attaches to one of the alternator mounting bracket bolts, and is very hard to see from above. It has blue insulation and is probably no longer very flexible. The bracket end terminal sometimes breaks off due to vibration and age.

can't help you with the relationship between the SRS and Alternator but as far as Brushes go. I did mine early but I would guess at around 170000 miles is about the right time.

Did you get the replacement ones from FCP or from a local store? If from a local one, which one shall I get?

TIA!

I was buying some other stuff from ALLOEMVOLVOPARTS.COM (THEPARTSBIN.COM)
So I just added that to the order. they were just a few bucks. I had over $50 worth of stuff so the Shipping was free.

Sorry it took so long to get back. I was away from the computer that receives the Brickboard responses.
