Hello, after what I thought was a smooth-going rear pad replacement job...my rear wheels make this bad scraping noise through part of the wheel rotation.

Does the Emergency brake need to be re-adjusted after new pads?

The caliper pistons gave me no trouble at all, going back in smoothly when I pressed them to make room for the new pads, nothing seemed damaged, I used new hardware also, but this gross scraping noise is there???

went for a 2 block test drive, brakes work fine, no mushy pedal or anything.

Could I have bent the round dustgaurd out of shape ( I did accidently bend it when removing the caliper bolts on one side..) and as a result it's rubbing on the rotor?

It sounds like it's coming from both wheels.. and I didn't bend the left side dustgaurd, just the right. P.S. - I re-bent the gaurd back into place, just so ya know...

whatever it is, stop driving with it as you may end up scoring your rotors before you know it. take the wheel off and get a look at it firsthand.

Two "off the wall" questions:

1) Why remove a caliper bolt on a pad change?

2) Might you have been distracted and installed a pad or two backwards (shim side to rotor)? BTDT

'93 940-NA (current) — 240s (one V8) — 140s — 122s — since '63.

Sounds like one or both of you dust sheild got tweaked, you can also check your hardware as I have seen the "+" shaped piece that is held in by the two pins scrape the rotor too.


Rule 308

My first thought was the retaining spring for the pads. When installed backwards on a 240 rear caliper, it scrapes the rotor and makes an awful noise. Not familiar with 740 rear calipers, however.
