How to repair odometer in 1987 740 ?

I removed my speedpmeter/odometer and have opened the case. But how do I remove the gears or the tumbling numbers, as they appear to be held in with axles that are pressed in in a manner that prevents removal. Thanks.

Remove the two screws that retain the stepper moter and circuit board and swing the board out of the way.

This exposes the gear which breaks and is the usual cause of odometer failure.

The pin arrowed below presses out of the housing from right to left to disconnect the gear train from the reels.

Thanks. That pin did come out after all. I think I have a different design on my odometer. It is made of white, not clear plastic, and I my 5000-service tumblers sit above the other two sets of numbers. When looking at the odometer reset stem (as when sitting in the car) I pressed the pin out from the right to the left, otherwise it wouldn't budge. Appreciate your help. When that gear breaks do people have a way of buying a new gear? Or is this procedure done just to set a replacement odometer's milage to match the milage of the failed odometer?

I forgot to mention in my previous post that there are two different makes of instruments fitted to 700s VDO (the most common) and YAZAKI.

Gears are available for the VDO speedos Click Here
