Won't shift out of park 900 1993

My son's 1993 960 won't shift out of park. This same thing happened a couple of years ago and I paid a shop to tow it in & fix it. I hate to do that again if it's an easy fix. I suspect it is but don't know where to start. Any help would be appreciated!

I agree with Kaz that it is most likely your shift lock override switch. It is supposedly a safety feature that prevents putting the car in gear without having your foot on the brake. There is a shift lock override button at the bottom of the shift indicator panel; push and hold it while you take the car out of park.

You can replace it yourself, or at least you can get it out of park and drive it to a shop for replacement. Directions on doing it yourself are in the FAQs:

Hope this helps.

There is a solenoid in the shift box that is activated when you press the brake petal. Basicly it forces you to put your foot on the brake when you shift out of park. There is a problem with that circuit. But for your immediate problem there should be an over-ride. You can usually acivate it by sticking a finger in the shift box at the 1st gear number. You should feel a small plastic lever. Push or engage it and it should allow you to shift out of park. You will have to do this every time you put it back in park.
