finally, here's 80-85 sealed beams in a n '86 240! PICTURES TOO 200 1986

Sorry for the big delay and keeping you all in suspense. I was gone to Vancouver just after I got the lights in, then couldn't get a digital camera until now. Here are pictures and some description of this project:

Here's what it looks like minus one homemade cover on driver's side. Note how the middle square "high beam" lights look weirdly aimed. It's because the huge driving lights cover the middle of the road, so I use the highs to point more to the sides. Anyways, here's the picture:

javascript:window.opener.document.frmMain.picture_url.value = '/IMAGELIB/images/3419.jpg';window.close();

Here's Just the front left light assembly with my homemade cover:

javascript:window.opener.document.frmMain.picture_url.value = '/IMAGELIB/images/3418.jpg';window.close();

Here's the top of the driver's side assembly, with no cover. Note, similar to Kane's conversion, I used 2.5 inch "L" brackets to bolt up the corner lights. Pretty easy really:

javascript:window.opener.document.frmMain.picture_url.value = '/IMAGELIB/images/3420.jpg';window.close();

Driver's side assembly. Note the mounting screw in the top right. I had to drill ALL the holes into the headlight plate, but there were some available behind some of the spots on the car's sheetmetal. In the top right bolt, I used a large machine screw then a big washer so there is a "gap" in-between the metal pieces. The second picture is that machine screw, except on the passenger side assembly:

javascript:window.opener.document.frmMain.picture_url.value = '/IMAGELIB/images/3422.jpg';window.close();

javascript:window.opener.document.frmMain.picture_url.value = '/IMAGELIB/images/3424.jpg';window.close();

The other 2 bolts are just a matter of finding the right spots and drilling. I know someone might say "Only 3 bolts?!?!" but with three bolts, the assemblies are FAR more stable than my old stupid bucket lights. Here's the other two bolts on the passenger side assembly:

javascript:window.opener.document.frmMain.picture_url.value = '/IMAGELIB/images/3423.jpg';window.close();

Now you might say "Well, that's nice, but is there any power behind the lights?" The answer is yes. I have relays running all the lights on my car. Here are the relays for the main headlights (there is a cover for them):

javascript:window.opener.document.frmMain.picture_url.value = '/IMAGELIB/images/3421.jpg';window.close();

So was it worth it? YES YES and YES. The improvement is literally night and day. I can see so much better with these sealed beam lights, and the lows are just the sylvania high-output performance type lights which I got at Canadian Tire for $16 each. My light output on "low" is probably double my old high beams with the buckets, and the light is VERY nicely distributed. After aiming the lights, I can see even better. The whole deal only took me a few hours to bolt/drill up. I have spent more time making covers for them (out of sheet aluminum). If you're looking for a direct, bolt-on replacement for lights, this is not for you, as the 80-85 light surrounds will not fit and you have to drill some holes. I also removed the chrome trim on the grill, which I think looks nice anyways. Well, I'm sure I didn't answer EVERY question, so feel free to ask. Happy bricking!

Rallye Lights 200 1986

Nate,

How are your rallye lights attached? I do a lot of nighttime driving during the summer in rural northern Michigan. I have a pair of KC Daylighters that I would like to install along the lines of what you have on your brick.

Thanks,
Keith

Rallye Lights 200 1986

My lights have big 1/2-inch bolts on mounting brackets on the bottom of them. I simply measured it out and then drilled the holes right through the plastic bumper cover and the bumper itself, then bolted them on from the inside of the bumper. If you need more info or if I explained the wrong part, feel free to ask and I'll help out however I can. Good luck with those!

Out of curiosity, why did you mount the brackets backwards? That is, on my 1980 and 1983, the more anterior of the two lights in each bracket is on the inside, beside the grill. This picture shows what I'm trying to describe:

In your photos, it appears that the more anterior of the two lights is on the outside, beside the blinker. Was there a functional reason for that arrangement of the bracket, or was it simply aesthetics?

Nice 200 1986

I love the look of your car Keith, very nice green, and I kinda like those twin round headlights, which I'm not sure if I've ever seen on an Australian brick.

I think I might have to have a project car that colour one day.

Thanks. That car is actually the RIP from my signature. A valiant effort to put it back on the road was met with failure. I stripped a lot of the goodies (including the round lights, which are now on my turbo wagon) before sending it away. My dad has the exact same car (year, color, etc.) except as a wagon:

It is a very nice green.

Ah, now there's a lovely wagon, do you do much of the work on your dad's car?

If I ever live in the US for a while (which is possible) I'll get myself something like that. Having put in the effort to learn to fix Volvos, I'd like to keep driving them for a while yet.

Nice 200 1986

To this point, I've done all the work on the car. Which isn't really saying much. My dad took his truck to a local, independent oil change place and saw that wagon sitting in a far bay, covered with dust. He made a comment to the technician about it, and the technician said it belonged to the shop owner and could be had for cheap. My dad went back during lunch and gave the guy $500 for it, not running. It was towed to my parents' house, and my dad pushed it in the garage. He called me and said that I had a project to complete over Christmas break- make the car run. It was a pretty easy task, considering that someone had put the wire from the fuel pump relay to the ignition coil on the positive pole instead of the negative pole. I switched the wire, turned the key, and my dad has been driving it ever since.

It is a gorgeous specimen. My parents live in the south, and it is 100% rust free.

Take care,
Keith

That's interesting....these lights are mounted just as all the other quad-suare beam lights are. On these ones, the interior light is set further back. Not really sure why. No asthetic reason....but good question,
