AC - HC 12A Freon 200

I going to fix my AC in my 83 240. I purchased a rebuilt York compressor and Volo upgarde kit. Can I do all or part the work myself? Any tips or tools I might need? Will the volvo Kit come with instuctions? Has anyone used HC 12a as a replacement for 134a freon? http://autocool-refrigerants.com/
Thanks for any help in keeping me cool in hot Arizona.

Not an expert... but a guy who reads a lot... and I have already done my 240 and it works well.

You should run R134, and not run these hydrocarbon blends.

Especially if you are using the volvo kit, why not do it right and completely convert?

You need many tools... Firstly you need to find the leak (yes you have at least one leak, that is why your system is not workign to start with). Leak detection tools.

Secondly you need a new dryer, yours is too old and the dessicant is no longer uselfull - you need that to absord system moisture and keep it running well and without oxidation.

Nextly you need to flush out the old mineral oil and add ester oil, or something compatible with newer refrigerant. if not, the compressor will seize up surprisingly fast.

A new expansion valve would be a good idea given its age and likey it is not calibrated to run well on anything other than the original R12 refriegarant.

O-rings, o-rings, everywhere possible...

Nextly you need to pull a vacuum on the system to as close as 29.9 millibars mercury as possible. For this you need a vacuum pump, as well as a set of manifold A/C guages with valves to monitor pressures. Before that you might want to adapt the ports to R134 posts too.

Lastly, if the vacuum holds well (i.e. no leak), you can charge up. Charge to 2.2x ambient temp in farenheit at the discharge (high side) port of the compressor - use the guages to see - with A/C on max and windows open - not in garage.

Then, diagnose performance as you wish.

Basically, A/C repair is not as simple as buying/installing parts. It's the science behind it, as well as the collection of necessary tools. Walmart kits are only destrucitve.

My two cents. Been there, done it, learned it the hard way.

Good luck!
