960 air pump mounts 900 1997

If anybody is interested, here is a little writeup on the procedure for replacing the rubber mounts for the warm air pump on a 1997 Volvo 960.

This is the pump that runs for several seconds after startup to help the engine warm up faster. It's located next to the exhaust manifold and is mounted by 3 rubber bushings to isolate the pump from vibrations. Over time the rubber gets brittle and will start to sag. In my case, one had broken outright and another was on the verge of breaking. You're probably better off replacing all 3 if you're going to do this, since the lower two are harder to see and if you know that you need to replace one, consider that the other two are probably in similar condition.

The Volvo part number is 1275534 and costs $10.11 per mount. They call it a 'rubber cushion'. FCP Groton has them as well for $4.67 each, but they are not listed on the website.

The cushion/bushing/mount or whatever you choose to call it is just a rubber part with two bolts extending out of either end, not much longer than a fingertip. The bushings themselves are screwed into the air pump, you can use a 17mm socket if it's long enough to extend over the length of the bushing, or a crescent wrench to tighten them to the pump. The other end of the bushings are secured to a mounting bracket using 10mm nuts.

Removal just involves unscrewing the 3 10mm nuts and pulling the pump back from it's mounting bracket. Once it's pulled away you can use the 17mm wrench to remove the old bushings. Throw away those rotting old things and screw the new ones into the pump. Move the pump forward into the mounting bracket and screw on the 3 10mm nuts.

Done! It's a pretty straight forward installation, the most time consuming thing for me was finding out which part I needed and what size tools to use. You can probably get this done in 15 minutes easily, there isn't very much to it.

Hope this is helpful to some people!

Happy driving.
