headlight switch magic! 1800 1973

Continuing with my electrical saga, I noticed that when I pull the headlight switch to on position, the Amp light in the speedometer case, the oil pressure idiot light in that case come on too! It also powers up the radio, and probably the fuel pump too! This is all without the ignition key even being in there!
I think this may be connected to the other problem that whenever I start up the car, the headlights automatically turn on in low beam, and act like day light running lights!
Where are he wires crossed? Your help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Shawn

Shawn;

If no one has been in there doing any "creative wiring" it's pretty likely that you're just dealing with poor connections as the other poster mentions...these are a sometimes a pain to find and can give some pretty whacko symtpoms...as you noticed!....I'd start by cleaning all fuses and their contacts, preping with anti-corrosive zinc paste, but install them one at a time and watch for the symptoms as you do...this may help locate the circuits involved...once you narrow it to a circuit, clean and prep all its chassis connections for starters...retest....good hunting!

See: http://www.intelab.com/swem/anti_corrosive_paste.htm

Gently poking around at suspect curcuit components and connectors with an "insulated poking tool" (IPT) might help too...the give-away chopsticks from the last oriental dinner are perfect for this...

Cheers

Shawn,

Check the parking/headlight grounds. I had a broken ground wire to the high mount brake light on my 86 245 ... stepping on the brakes lit up the instrument warning lights as it sought ground through that circuit.
