Cause of electric window fuse blowing too often 200 1992

I own a 1992 245 and have noticed the fuse that relates to the electric windows has been blowing several times a year. I know cleaning the clips that hold the fuse could be a problem and figured the gear and other parts that lift the window may need re-lubed and are taking more current because of more friction. Is that a possibility or am I wrong as always?

Anyway I removed the door panel and re-lube the metal gear and plastic pieces that slide. I used grease on the gear and liquid soap on the plastic but when I was done with the drivers side I didn't notice any difference between it and the passenger side window when I raised and lowered them at the same time.

Am I wasting my time re-lubing the rest of the windows? What else could be the cause of the window fuse and occasionally the 11th fuse down from the top blowing so often?

Cause of electric window fuse blowing too often 200 1992

When I got my '91 a few years ago, it had the same issue. After messing with it for too long, I finally took it to the shop for repairs. What they told me was that Volvo just has too much stuff running through that small 8a fuse. I think I remember that the biggest part of the problem was the electric fan in front of the radiator. About the time two or three occupants of the car decide to lower a window to let the hot air out, the fan kicks on with the a/c. All that going on at once just pops your fuse. It may occur to you that your problem is in the hot summer months. You probably did not blow any fuses this winter. So, how did the shop make the repair? By up-sizing the fuse to 16a. I normally would not recommend this, and you can proceed at your own risk, but the guy who has worked with Volvos for more than 30 years assured me this was a common problem and a common fix. It has worked for me with no problem and no blown fuses for over five years.

Cause of electric window fuse blowing too often 200 1988

Hey dash,
My sister had the same problem with her 87 740 and it was the little section of wires that passed from the door to the support beam and operated in much the same way as the door hinges. It just started to split open the insulation and then eventually the wire itself broke. I your case, it could be an exposed +12V wire occasionally rubbing against a GND wire and causes the fuse to pop. This happened at her drivers door and at the tailgate hinge.

Good Luck

Adrian
