What should I watch for on an automatic 89 240 with 82k in top condition? I've heard the ECU's can be a problem. Is the fix expensive? Any ideas on the value of such a beast?

The ECU shouldn't be too much of a factor, because you can keep an eye out for some spares off of known running vehicles.

Values can vary a bit from one region to another, and condition of vehicle. The Blue Book at kbb.com is a always a good source for a private party resale value. You'll get a figure that you can use as a basis for negotiation.

If it is the '561' ECU you can find a replacement at some local PnP or on Ebay. The '561' was superceded by the '951'. I got a '951' on e-bay for about $60.00 (without shipping) but it also included the MFI Module. I have an extra '561' that was removed from a running car. Make me an offer and we will talk.

P.S. The car is still 15 years old. Keep that in mind. Check the Suspension, Brakes (hoses, pads and rotors), Driveline (complete), Timing Belt and Seals, PCV System, Intake & Exhaust Manifold Gaskets & Various other "typical" things for a 15 year old car.
