Brake Job Question 700 1990

My 90 740GL Wagon is going to need brakes soon and I'm thinking about doing it myself. How difficult is it to do pads and rotors front and rear for someone with decent mechanical ability? Any advice or warnings?

Thanks!

Brake Job Question 700 1990

Ever do an oil change or change the tranny fluid or the coolant in your car? If so, you are good to go on doing the brakes, and you'll save some money... assuming you want to spend the time doing it. Like someone suggested, check the FAQ.

Oh, replace the brake fluid while you're down there if you haven't done it in a while. I suggest ATE Super Blue, sold by FCPGroton.

My own cost breakdown for a non ABS system:

ATE front vented rotors, 11.25":
$90 ($45 x 2)
ATE rear rotors:
$56 ($28 x 2)
Mintex pads:
$22
1 Liter Super Blue:
$9
Brake cleaner and SilGlyde brake grease from Autozone:
~$7

Total: $184

Remember, this is all new stuff. Not resurfaced like what the previous poster put. I'm not bashing his opinion or anything... just providing a different viewpoint. :)

Brake Job Question 700 1990

For what it is worth.

I have a 740Gl Sedan with 120k on it. It was time to do the brakes, and since
I am not mechanically inclined, I brought it to Midas.

I paid the following 4/10/04
(Massachusetts Prices)

Caliper Service $46.00
Resurface Rotors $39.90
Midas Plus Pads $89.95
Disc brake shims $24.95

The rear brakes were ok, they just needed to be lubed.

And of course, since it was on a lift I paid $19.50 to change the oil.

Total bill $235.39

Break*down: Parts: $83.85
Labor: $136.90
Tax etc.
It might be worth the time to get a free inspection, so you know
what you might be getting into before you start your own repairs.

Regards,

Tom

please note: (I do not work for Midas, and I personally do not know anyone who works for Midas)

ABS? Be sure to clamp off the hose or at least open the bleeder before pushing the caliper pistons back or risk damage to the system.
