more info on non-op taillight 700

my passenger side brake light is non op, sometimes it works but mostly not.

here is the scoop:
good bulbs, fuses
the drivers side works fine.
pulled the socket from driver's side and placed in pass. side. lights up when lights are one but not when braking.
vice verse, non op for driver's side.

if you guys can help me track this down i would really appreciate it. thanks

Check the ground wire on the passenger side. It must be tight to the frame. Mine wasn't grounded (someone connected a ground to the metal holding the lights, wrong). Follow the ground from the driver's side and you will find it goes to the pass side and then to the frame. Wow.

Do not swap taillight sockets from side to side, as they are not the same.

I removed both taillights from our '88 744 because of strange stoplight behavior, and found both sides to be damaged by heat.

After careful examination, I found that the sockets were not contacting the circuit boards properly, and were shorting out, melting the body of the tailight lenses.

I had swapped them to check for a bad bulb.

After I returned the sockets to their proper places and cleaned the contacts, the lights worked fine.

BTW - My sockets were different colored plaastic.
