My ignition coil is squared and on the driver's side (not the Bosch version) confused please help!!! 700

Greetings one of my 1989 740 GL wagons (non-turbo 8 valve) has an ignition coil that is on the driver's side. I resembles a american (general motors) style of coil, whereas it is square in shape and has its very own small bracket. I have bosch cap/rotor and bougicord wires, but when did this particuar coil get introduced to the line? Are they more or are they less efficient than the original tubular Bosch versions? The car currently has 285,000 miles on it and runs strong! Please help all of your reponses would be greatly appreciated!

Best Regards!

My 90 740 GL wagon with 230k has what appears to be the original Regina coil and it still works fine. I hear they are very tough. If you perchance want a spare there are two Regina coils on eBay currently starting at $15.

Sounds to me like you have the Regina engine management system rather than the Bosch. I wasn't aware that it was in any 89s, but it was in the non-turbo B230s from 90 on. If so, you don't have an Air Mass Meter either (and that's a plus.)

Check the FAQ section on Regina identification if you aren't sure.

I have both systems and both seem good. The Regina specific parts do seem to be more expensinsive in general, though.

Here is the link to the portion of the FAQ for identifying Regina and yes, it says some '89s had it.
