760-un turbo cutting out 700 1989

My 89 760-T wagon with 220K on it has just developed a new quirk. (BTW-the turbo was disconnected at 150K for the usual reason) Today was the first really warm day (80) we've had, just in case that may be a factor. Car is warmed up- park it, come out a little while later, starts up no problem, tachs at a grand, goes good until you step on gas to go into traffic or accelerate underway, then it cuts out (like a waste-gate cut-out with the turbo under load) until you let up off the gas and bring it back up slowly. Problem goes away for the most part after 3-4 minutes but occasionally comes back to haunt when sudden acceleration is needed. When it cuts out, idle drops back to a grand, just as if I never stepped on the pedal. WHAT'S UP??? All help appreciated! -J-Dog

Among the myriad things that it could be:

Make sure you don't have a disconnected vacuum line or a partially or fully disconnected spark plug wire. These are the easiest and cheapest fixes.

It could be a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Also check the vacuum line to it,

I also had a similar problem caused by a faulty throttle position switch (TPS).

    Good luck.

I'm betting on the TPS. If the car can consistantly idle, but attempting to accelerate brings symptoms of a VERY Lean fuel mixture, then it's probably a bad or stuck TPS. It may be stuck in the idle position, or it could be moving freely but the internal conductive tracks are bad and thus electrically registering the car "at-idle" throughout the range of movement.

      God bless,
      Fitz Fitzgerald.
