RE: '82 244DL 4spd+OD ,K-Jet FI , 162K .Today my engine started over-revving up to 2500 RPM at idle . Checked linkage, butterfly ,cable etc. Drove home & replaced the idle control unit with a good used spare. Problem solved . How often have people had this experience as these units usually last a long time ? .

I have had 2 bad ones, I fixed them both by replacing the output transistors which drive the coils in the idle motor.
If you like I wouldn't mind taking a look at your broken one to see if I can find the problem......

ICU's can often become coated in varnish with years and many miles of use. Mine was misbehaving in cold weather last fall so I cleaned it out with some carb cleaner and it's been great since. If you haven't tossed the other, maybe give that a try and hang on to it just in case.

Just reseating all associated connectors is a first step mentioned in manuals.

I switched connectors to old & new unit.When I switched back to the old unit it went back to the old problem so I do not think it was a question of dirty connectors.

Well look at it this way. If the ICU that went bad was the one from the factory then you can say they last about 150K or 20+ years. I rarely hear people complaining about bad ICU's when it comes to the K-Jets. Now for the LH-Jet system there is always posts regarding bad ECU's as well as ECU's that have bad software to begin with. I'm sure you replacement ICU will last a long time but I would get another one just to have a spare the next time this happens (maybe 20 years from now). Take Care!
