Old oil sender unit ID needed, and Bentley shows the wrong location 200

I'm trying to get all of the gauges I have ready for a single mass installation into the 93 240. I have a 3 bar oil pressure gauge and a sender that I'm curious about. The sender looks like a 1 1/4" galvanized pipe cap with two threaded terminals on one end with the short nipple straight out of the other end . Is this an original sender for the 3 bar gauge? Also, when I looked at the Bentley manual for sender location, the sketch shows the B230 engine as having the original sender unit threaded downward into a protruding part of the engine block (straight out with hole facing 90 degrees up). On older engines B21 and B23, it shows the sender screwed straight into the side of the block. Strangely, my B230's sender is screwed straight into the side of the block. Anyone know why Bentley shows it to be different? Or, did B230s come either way?

Look at the hex head base of the sender, there you will find a description of the sender/gauge engraved.

Sure enough. I had looked closely before but didn't see anything at all except some rust. Wire brushed it off and now I see "0-5 bar" plus some other numbers. Looks like I need to find a 5 bar gauge...

There shouldn't be any reason not to just screwing this sender straight into the same threaded hole as the original, should there? As both terminals are identical, can I take my pick as to which goes to the light, and which goes to the gauge?

Thanks very much for the help!

Why not get a 0-3 bar sender? Especially since the sender is much less pricey than a gauge. Never mind... 3 bar is pitiful as it is only 43.5 psi!

Mike!

hi there. all the oil pressure senders i have gotten will not screw into the block of the b230 motor without a bushing, i found the bushing at autozone part number cp7573 i think its 14+1.5 to 1/8" npt. run a wire from G connector on the sender to the back of the guage, it has G marked on one of the connectors.

Thanks for the suggestion. This sender is a big clunky thing, looks like a 1 1/4 galvanized pipe cap with two threaded post terminals on one end. I can't see any G at all. It might be underneath the corrosion, so I will double check that tomorrow. As for the bushing, I won't know until I get the original one out. This one looks to be 1/8" pipe thread. It has a 45 elbow on it which I probably won't need, as I think I can screw this one in directly to the block. No bends needed that I can see. I just saw a 3 gauge cluster listed on eb*y tonight. It has the same type of oil pressure sender as I have here.

When I get done with this gauge upgrade, I will have learned lots from all of the contributors to this list. My thanks to all!

The sender is 1/8npt and the block is m14x1.5...so you can't just screw it into the block, which someone already said.

I have a 5 bar Volvo 240 oil pressure gauge if you're interested. $12 plus shipping.

Thanks Mike. Someone else offered my a 5 bar and I already took him up on the offer. So won't need another. Looks like I will need the adapter though. Do you have one of those available, or is that a common item at the local parts house?
