prolonged shimmy after potholes, on the road in/ near Orange Park FL 700

My 88 740 with 180K has started to have 3-4 second shimmy after hitting a pothole or crossing a RR track. it also is doing it sometimes at slower speeds in traffic. A solid shake back and forth on both front tires gives me a quiet clunk on the drivers side. I am thinking wheel bearing, but a fellow volvo owner thinks its a strut rod and nothing to worry about till I get home, a 600 mile trip.

Does anyone have some good advice, or any locals that can reccomend a good shop (indpendant?) in the Orange Park area?

I am doing National Guard stuff at Camp Blanding, and need to get this resolved or feel comfortable that it will get me home the 600 miles I need to travel in 5 days.

Off-Topic: Ultra Van 700

As a certifiable car-geek, just wanted to thank you for bringing to my attention a vehicle I'd never heard of. And I thought the Rampside was quirky!

Thanks for the replys, I jacked it up last night and confirmed it was'nt a wheel bearing, I will get the strut or ball join issue adressed when I get home. For the record it bounces twice

Hi:

Use the bounce test. push down hard on each front fender. If it bounces more than one time, you need struts. Sounds like you have no Strut control at all. This test should work for that. Check the Ball Joints too.

There's a shop in Jacksonville that I take my 960 to. They specialize in Volvos. It's called Blanding Volvo, and it's on 103rd St. Let me know if you need more info.

Typical symptom of worn out ball joints, not worn struts.
