prolonged shimmy after potholes, on the road in/ near Orange Park FL 700

My 88 740 with 180K has started to have 3-4 second shimmy after hitting a pothole or crossing a RR track. it also is doing it sometimes at slower speeds in traffic. A solid shake back and forth on both front tires gives me a quiet clunk on the drivers side. I am thinking wheel bearing, but a fellow volvo owner thinks its a strut rod and nothing to worry about till I get home, a 600 mile trip.

Does anyone have some good advice, or any locals that can reccomend a good shop (indpendant?) in the Orange Park area?

I am doing National Guard stuff at Camp Blanding, and need to get this resolved or feel comfortable that it will get me home the 600 miles I need to travel in 5 days.
