Valve hushers 200 1989

Dear Bricksters,

Whenever you check your valve clearance do you replace the rubber valve husher while you are in there? Does that substantially quiet down noisy valves in your experience? How expensive are these hushers?

Many Thanks in advance.

When I put the VX in my ride, I changed the hushers. I also adjusted the valves... bear in mind that the two most important steps to reduced valve noise were taken. The "before" sonic picture was clickity-clack, all over the place. The "after" is show room quite... HUGE difference.

Adjusting the valves to proper clearances is going to do you right, the other can be done if you change out for a new cam. The seals are cheap as hell... but, it is interesting to know they might not have been fitted to the Euro market.

Peace, Jon

The dampners are not accessable without removing the camshaft and then the followers. The followers hold the shims which are responsible for achieving the correct valve clearance. The dampners are fitted to the top of the valve stem under the follower.

I think they are about $1.00 each (8/engine).

I adjust the valves at the same time I am changing the timing belt and seals. I don't have the tool necessary to depress the cam follwer to remove the shim so I simply remove the camshaft. This makes it very easy to change out the shims and dampners.

I am not convinced that new dampners make all that much difference in reducing noise but I like to think I notice a change :-)

Randy

I don't think they even bothered fitting them for the European market - at least I've never seen any. I can't believe US Volvos are any quieter than UK ones as a consequence.
