Shifter Indicator Lighting 900 1993

I have a '93 940 sedan that I picked up a couple of weeks ago to be an extra family car that my 16yo son will be driving. It's in really nice shape, 97K miles, and lots of nice features. While my son would have preferred something with a little more cool factor, he's glad to have wheels, any wheels, and he does recognize the many nice features (leather, sunroof, operational A/C which was all replaced last year, etc.) and my wife and I are more comfortable with him in a sold, safe car without an overabundance of power (he had his eye on my 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII and its 280 HP V8!). This is the first Volvo I have owned.

I have noticed that the gear shifter indicator (P R N D 2 1) does not light up, so I am assuming the bulbs are burnt out (no fuses appear blown). I did replace the bulb that lights up the seat heater switches, and, while I had the console cover off, I see that it appears the base of the shifter mechanism housing will have to be unbolted (four bolts, one at each corner) to get underneath to change the bulb or bulbs. Can anyone confirm this for me? Anything to watch out for? Or is there an easier way that I'm not seeing?

I frequent similar type boards for my Mark VIII and Subaru Outback, and have found them invaluable in maintaining those cars. It appears that there is a similar pool of knowledge here, and I look forward to participating.

    K9,

I recently did this on my '94 945T, I can only assume that both the '93 and '94 has the same lighting set up. Read the FAQ for the procedure, very detailed. I also highly recommend you use a 90 degree bend needle nose plier, it makes putting the plastic light holder back into the base very easy.

You can get the full FAQ from the "Features" pull down menu above. Here's a link to the correct section: Electrical: Instruments

    Good luck,

K9, that shifter lamp, if the 93 is still the same as the later ones (I believe it is) is inside a small cylinder that reflects the light to the bezel. It is a 'micro' lamp. It only has small wires that you bend on the side (like a Christmas tree light) to make contact. The plastic block that the wires go to slides out of the shifter assembly, you must pull straight and evenly to get it out. They sometimes are cracked from the heat but a SMALL bit of clear silicon renders it reuseable. Careful to not get it on the electric contacts.
Good luck with your Volvo, if you stay out of the dealer for parts you should be very happy with it.

      Bean & KD2:

Thanks for the info and the link to the FAQ section on this. It is done -- I did not have bent-nose needle-nose pliers so I gave it a try anyway, figuring I could always head off to the harware/auto supply store to get some if absolutely necessary. It took a while but I did eventually get it back in without having to buy the pliers.

While checking out the FAQ, I moved on to the section for replacing the bulbs for the dash panel switches (defroster, sunroof, etc.), and got that all disassembled, but need to order the replacement bulbs. At least now I know how it all goes together and how many of the bulbs I need, so it will go quicker when I do get the replacement bulbs.

      Thanks again!
