I have a '93 940 sedan that I picked up a couple of weeks ago to be an extra family car that my 16yo son will be driving. It's in really nice shape, 97K miles, and lots of nice features. While my son would have preferred something with a little more cool factor, he's glad to have wheels, any wheels, and he does recognize the many nice features (leather, sunroof, operational A/C which was all replaced last year, etc.) and my wife and I are more comfortable with him in a sold, safe car without an overabundance of power (he had his eye on my 1994 Lincoln Mark VIII and its 280 HP V8!). This is the first Volvo I have owned.
I have noticed that the gear shifter indicator (P R N D 2 1) does not light up, so I am assuming the bulbs are burnt out (no fuses appear blown). I did replace the bulb that lights up the seat heater switches, and, while I had the console cover off, I see that it appears the base of the shifter mechanism housing will have to be unbolted (four bolts, one at each corner) to get underneath to change the bulb or bulbs. Can anyone confirm this for me? Anything to watch out for? Or is there an easier way that I'm not seeing?
I frequent similar type boards for my Mark VIII and Subaru Outback, and have found them invaluable in maintaining those cars. It appears that there is a similar pool of knowledge here, and I look forward to participating.
