1975 244DL - collectors item or not? 200

Hi,

maybe I am just too enthusiastic about it... but still. I am in my sweet European home right now, and one day, taking an evening walk, I spotted an old 244, manufactured in 1975. Body is in beautiful shape, and guess what... it is for sale!!! Car is in good running shape, very little rust, pretty lovely car.

Now, my two questions.

1. Is it really a collectors car, or am I out of luck seeing one until now? Does it lack lot of the beauties of the later 240s or is it as solid as the later models?
2. If it is a collectors car, is anyone interested in shipping it over to the States? I know it sounds kinda creepy, but I do not have the funds to do this and Im just thinking somebody in the States could be very happy if this is his dream car.

As with most cars, and not just Volvo, the 4-door is the least desirable style. The common order of decreasing value is 2-door then wagon, followed in a distant 3rd place by sedan.

    My '75 242 cost me $50. My '75 245 was free. What's the value of a 4-door?

I know in the US, the '75 240s came with a B-20 engine, which has had mixed reviews on the board.

The general consensus is that the '75 240 is the one to avoid.

In 1976, Volvo introduced the B-21, and it's basic design was used until the 940s were discontinued.

Other difference from later 240s would be the interrior. I have a '76 245 and a '77 244, and the inside of the car is a lot closer to a 140 then the later 240s. They have different door panels, door pockets and arm rests. Here's a picture out of my '76 to show you:

In this case, that black plastic "pocket" thing was a dealer option. Most 240s of the time didn't have that pocket.

I actually like this door pocket set up better then the one that is in my '80 (which is the one they used from '78-'93). The plastic door pockets in the later models isn't very durable.

Other then the B20 engine though, it's pretty much like any other 240.

Having the first year would be a nice addition to most Volvo nuts collection. It would make for a good restoration project if the person had the time and money. One question I have is how much is the 244DL going for? Just like knowing what the value of these cars are on the other side of the pond. Thanks for your time!

    Sincerely,

If you do pursue bringing it into the US, check the regulations on importing cars into the US, since there are different regulatory requirements on safety and emissions items (though very old cars may be exempt).

don't waste your money bringing it to the US. if you want a 75 244 in the states, find one that's already here, i've seen plenty of them. it'll be a lot cheaper. as far as i know, the first 240s in europe were the 1974 models, the US didn't get them until 1975. so, maybe a 1974 244 would be worth it, but not a '75.
