Burn exhaust manifold Gasket every 6 months... 200 1983

Hi!,
I have a problem with the exhaust manifold gasket every 6 months, it burns and I have to replace it and I have a Question about this, Is this normal for a 240 turbo? I see on the bottom of the exhaust manifold and I note the is no "Exhaust manifold stiffener plate" installed (I see a photo on haynes manual), is this the cause of the problem? Any advice, thanks!

Edwin

Hola...You need the Brackets+Muffler bolt at bottom. Get new studs+nuts .As mentioned: check with a Straight edge..

Daveshan make a good point. Are you using new nuts for the stud or the ones you took off ? Try using cooper nuts/washers for the manifold studs.
Should be new each time...I don't always pratice what I preach, and I pay later.

Are you reversing the gaskets on installation? "Ut" means "out", away from the manifold.

Steve, I think the "UT"/metal side is supposed to be against the manifold. The gasket material should be against the cylinder head.

I hope so or else I'll have to swap mine on the 945T!! Nooooooo!!!

Still don't know what thread pitch the head bolts are, will email when I do find out.

Thanks,
Bean

If you don't have the lower brace on it you will have issues, also check the bracket that is supposed to be just below the cat to hold the exhaust pipe to the block in the belhousing area. If either or both of these are missing/loose you will go through gaskets like candy BTDT.

You could have a bad manifold.

Are you using Volvo gaskets or aftermarket? Have you experimented with different brands?

lay the manifold on a flat surface next time before install, see if the thing is warped...lots of heat on metal, with someone over torquing it at one time is not good for theses cast mani's......

roberto

had a toyota corolla one time that went through like 3 from the dealer...they didnt know what inch lbs meant i guess.....

cya....
