Odometer problems 200

The odometer in my wife's '79 244 works intermittently. I understand from earlier posts that the problem is with one of the nylon gears inside. I have the instrument panel off and the speedometer removed from it. The three spiral-shaped gears are ok. How do I get to the culprit gear and where do I get a replacement? I have twisted the tabs that appear to hold stuff together, but there's something else holding it frinly and I don't want to foul stuff up.

Any help will be appreciated.

I think the gear is supposed to grip the shaft. So maybe the gear is loose on the shaft. If so, try a dab of glue.

It's behinde the little electric drive motor on the side of the speedo head. You take two small screws out and the motor and a small plate it is mounted on will pull back and expose the bad boy. Make sure you get all the old broken theeth out of the gear that the bad one drives, use magnifier glass to ck it good. I can email you a pic if you need it, let me know.

Jeff Caplan makes excellent reproduction gears. http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/cable.html. This link goes directly to the page for Volvo mechanical speedometer gears.
The one that usually goes bad is the one in the picture. Examine the one from your speedometer. It may look fine but it is probably split along the axis. Count the number of teeth and order accordingly.

Or see http://www.homestead.com/volvo2/Odometer.html for an alternate method of repair. The instrument cluster pictured is the '81 and later mechanical type but the mechanism is pretty much the same.

Yes that's the guy we've bought from, nice person. 25$ for the gear that usually goes on 1986+ 240's, alot cheaper than sending in the speedo for repair.

I bet the big spiral gear perpendicular to the speedo (sort of) has a crack in the gear if you look real close.

No that's not the one that goes all the time.
