740 wagon rear brakes 700

Hi everyone! Question: I have a clacking sound from the right rear brake after 5 minutes or so of driving. Upon inspection I find normal looking rotor and plenty of pad thickness. The (2) pins which hold the spring and pads in place seem to be somewhat loose in the outer caliper holes. Can someone tell me if this is a pin problem or a caliper hole being worn too large problem. The pins have slight pitting/wear but not really a whole lot. Please help, it seems like its a little louder everyday.

The pins are held in place by small rubber "springs" which don't work unless the pin is hammered home with hammer and punch. If they remain loose, replace them. If the new pins work loose, then the caliper holes might be worn.

Are you sure the spring is located correctly with the ends under the pins?

Thanks for the response! I'm pretty sure that I have the spring in correctly, although I have wondered how effective it is...it looks its age ('91). I did tap w/ hammer, I did not try the punch, which I will try next. Thanks again

If you look at the ends of the pins, the "springs" (actually, 1/4 inch split bushings) bulge out slightly. You hammer the pins so that the ends are flush with the caliper surface and these "springs" hold them securely in place inside the caliper.
