Rack - metal hydraulic line leaking at fitting 200 1986

My steering rack (cam) has a leak at one of the fittings for the metal lines. I've gotten a stubby 7/16" fitting wrench on it and tightened it, but I think it might be stripped or cross threaded because it never becomes fully tight like the other fittings. Where can I buy a replacement hydraulic line and fittings? Any other suggestions? The rack is only a year old and I don't want to replace it just because of a leaky fitting.
Thanks,
Tom

The bolts are either 14 or 16 mm x 1.5 mm thread pitch. The 14mm head takes a 17 mm wrench, I don't remember the 16 mm wrench size. Some racks have two 16's and some have one of each. The bolts are hollow and known as banjo bolts and fittings. They require copper washers to seal. The dealer has them of course but banjo fittings are also available from http://www.parker.com. Look for a local distributor of Parker products under hydraulics in the yellow pages. However, since the bolts are hard they may be ok.

The fittings I'm talking about are for the steel lines that run from one side of the rack to the other. They require an 11mm or 7/16" flarenut wrench, but I'm unsure of the thread pattern. I believe you are talking about the hose from the P/S pump and the return back to the reservoir.

Bad news, I have the same problem with my '90 744. The fitting in mine is steel (like the line) the body of the rack is MUCH softer.

My rack is stripped - I'll bet yours is also. I am experienced AND pretty careful, but I stripped it!

I am posting a question about the size and thread of the fitting, so I can get a heli-coil to repair the rack.

When you put the fine fitting into the rack, it should thread all the way using your fingers! If not, the line needs adjusting because it is a bit out of position.

If I have any luck, I'll look you up. If you have luck, please let me know.

Yeah, it's a steel fitting. Let me know what you find out about the thread size - I'll do the same. Thanks for your response,
      Tom
