240: Intermittent start problems, 1992. Should I suspect the wiring harness?

Been having intermittent start problems where the engine will cut out while driving. Sometimes it will restart, sometimes not. Sometimes after the car has been moved or jacked up it will restart. In reading over previous posts it sounds like the wiring harness problems common in earlier 240's were more or less taken care by '92.

I've checked some of the more common intermittent start problems (fuses, relays, plugs, wires, fuel pump, fuel regulator, rpm sensor, vacuum hoses, air mass meter). Should I give some serious thought to the wiring harness? Anyone else with a later 240 (post-1988) had problems with theirs?

Thanks for the help.

never heard of these having harness problems... you must have another problem.

You never mentioned the fuel pump relay, most likely culprit. Resolder or replace.

Next in line is the RPM sensor. Did you replace it? You can;t exactly 'check' it. Replace.

Does the '92 have the 30A ignition blade fuse behind the battery? That socket corrodes, needs replacement.

Your problem should be simple, and your car is stil lvery young... don;t get discouraged.

Maybe you can better define 'doesn;t start'. Does it fire at all? Does it fire and then stall? If it fires but does not hold idle, try unplugging the AMM (with igintion OFF) and start it, if it strts you have a bad AMM and likely a preheat thermostat to the pre-heat hose that is stuck open...

    Good luck!

      Thanks Greg.

I did check the fuel relay. It clicks when I turn the key, so I'm assuming it works. I also switched this out with an identical relay on the driver's side (don't know what this other relay does, do you?) and that also clicked when I turned the key.

As far as "won't start" goes, it will crank energentically, but about half the time it won't fire up. Sits for a a day or two, then, for no apparent reason, it will start up and run fine. Then, also for no apparent reason, it will cut out, usually when decelerating or at low speed. Sometimes it will reluctantly start right again, other times not.

I haven't replaced the rpm sensor, and it doesn't look in too great a shape. If this is bad, could it cause the cutting out problem when driving; or would it present a plain no start problem?

So far as I can tell (by looking and reading) the 240 doesn't have an ignition fuse. I could be wrong here though. I'll keep looking.

Thanks again for the help . . . and encouragment!

      Andy
