I have owned an '89 780 for about five years. Definitely, a different breed of Volvo. It handles so much better than my old 240 or my '91 940. The four-cylinder turbos were first introduced in '89 and were much more reliable, and peppier than the 6-cylinder Renault engine they used previously. I've got a 89/780 Bertone and love it. Parts are very high but that is the price you pay for a rare car.
Mine is the Turbo with the Turbo plus.
That turbo plus was standered on the 780 I have the window sticker and it was right at $40,000 in 89 which was alot of money for that year. Ser#6859

About 5,000 780s were imported to the USA from 87 to 91. All were AT, the early ones had the very nice, smooth V6 - 89 and later just had the turbo. There were no 'special editions'. Bertone built all of the 2 door Volvos - 242.
The 780s were around $40,000 new back then.

I almost bought one when I was car shopping last. It was a piece of junk. Some BMW dealership acquired it and let it sit and rot. I can't remember what the transmission issues with the 780s was...was the manual transmission only avail in europe? And what was with the "turbo plus" option?
