Oley,

Art is correct, your problem is the A\C microswitch, but it may be beyond needing a hard shut off.

I've had two of my cars have this problem. You will need to take apart the center of the dash so you can get to the back of the A\C switch.

Pull the knob off of the switch and remove the front cover plate, (the part with the blue and red swirl). This gives you access the locknut, remove locknut and seperate the switch from the dash plate.

When you get it apart it will become clear how the switch works. There is a lever/flap that pushes in on the switch when knob is in the off position.

The lever/flap needs to be adjusted, I use a pair of needlenose pliers to slightly bend the lever. It should click just before the off position.

What you may not have realized unless you have a tach is that when the fans kick on the rpm's automatically increase from 750 to 900 to compensate for A\C load. With the switch out of adjustment, the car thinks the A\C is on.

I just fixed this problem on my 84 245, and I think the rpm increase was killing my mpg. I'm in the middle of a mpg test right now and it looks as if I may have an increase.

If you turn the AC control knob all the way left (hard left) it will stop.

On my '89 240, I can turn the AC knob till it screams in pain, but the fan still keeps running w/ the fan in OFF. Haven't got a clue.

There's a microswitch on the back of the AC thermostat control. It should open when the control is turned off, I believe, so your fan will run on low at any setting of the AC knob above off. The fan is not supposed to cycle with the thermostat, but I think it is supposed to shut off when that microswitch opens. Maybe the switch is prone to problems, but in all of mine the knob needs to know some pain before it shuts off. Well, mostly my fingers...

My 82 had the micro-switch crack. Some crazy glue and 3 years latter it still works. Take the thermostat out and give it a good a good look.
