Front anti-sway bar bushings question 200

Just replaced the front stabilizer bar bushings on the 240 sedan today with blue neoprene units. The holes in the old black rubber bushings that hold the bar to the frame were very elongated (oval shaped from age/wear). What effect, if any, might the elongated holes have had on suspension action.......clunking or excessive sway possibly? Other symptoms? Just curious .

Front anti-sway bar bushings question 200

I installed a 23mm bar on the front of one of my 240s and I never did find the right bushings. The FCP bushings are wrong. IPD has some aftermarket ones that work, but they are 40bucks. The Volvo dealer doesn't have the right ones either. I've been told you can use 740 brackets. Looking into it.

Front anti-sway bar bushings question 200

I just put Turbo bars on my 81. The front one is 23mm. The local Volvo dealer had exactly what I needed.

      #1273184 bushing, need two.
      #1330185 clamp, need two.
      #1359391 brace, need two.
      #1205991 end-link bushing, need four.

Total price for the ten pieces was #46.66.

These are standard genuine Volvo rubber with nice new-style clamps. It all went together nicely. No problems so far.

Front anti-sway bar bushings question 200

The ovalized holes delay the effect of the bar (it moves a little before it twists). This creates a loose feeling in the handling. Eventually it will thump. I had not problem with my ipd poly bushings with the stock bars. Conversion to ipd bars was a better step.

Front anti-sway bar bushings question 200

Both the effects you mention are likely with ovalled bushings.

I put the blue poly (made in Australia) bushings in the 83 with a Turbo bar and they worked loose in a few miles - serious clunking then! There doesn't appear to be any inbuilt way of keeping them centered in the brackets. I'd guess they are a generic design not meant specifically for the Volvo brackets which require a 'cast-in' nub in the bushings to retain them. I drilled small holes in the brackets and 'safety wired' them to keep the bushings - more or less - centered.

Yikes! That's exactly what I finished installing......the blue bushings onto a 23mm turbo bar. Got them from IPD. Is IPD aware of this problem?

Got mine from FCP, so may not be the same. Check yours against the old Volvo ones and look for the protrusion that keeps them centered. If absent, give IPD a call and ask about this.

IPD's original specialty and biggest "240" money maker has been suspension parts (chiefly, the anti-sway bars) so I would expect that they have done their homework....but check.
